ABOUT

Kariega Game Reserve and Safari Lodges is a warm and welcoming family-owned and operated conservation project situated on the stunning coastal Garden Route in South Africa's Eastern Cape. They are committed to providing responsible tourism experiences, community welfare and social upliftment, the sustainable use of resources and restoring the natural balance and beauty of their 10,000-hectare, malaria-free, wilderness reserve.

Home to the Big 5, as well as zebra, giraffe, hippo, multiple species of antelope and abundant birdlife, Kariega, offers a unique safari experience as it is bordered by two vital rivers so that in addition to 4X4 game viewing and walking tours there is opportunity for kayaking and riverboat excursions to view wildlife and/or to visit the beautiful beach on the Indian Ocean at Kenton-on-Sea.

The Reserve's portfolio of 5, 4or5-star safari lodges offers a variety of ways to touch the land, nurture your soul and fully experience this pristine wilderness with its abundance of wildlife and dramatic scenery. There's the family-friendly Main Lodge with 24 log chalets all with large viewing decks, the romantic and private Ukhozi, the luxurious River Lodge overhanging the Bushman River a quick trip from the beach, the remote 5-star tented Settler's Drift safari camp and spa and the historic Homestead private lodge for groups or families of up to 14 persons.

When you invest your tourism dollar in a safari and stay at the Kariega Game Reserve, you can sleep well knowing you are directly and responsibly supporting the local communities and the valuable rejuvenation and conservation work of the Kariega Foundation.

For those who like to travel for deeper purpose and connection with a place, Kariega also offers a Conservation Volunteer Program where you can have a hands-on life-enriching experience, not only with sustainable wildlife management and conservation but community development initiatives as well.

HOW THEY ARE CREATING A BETTER WORLD

Let us count the many ways that Kariega Game Reserve, Safari Lodges and Foundation are working to create a better world and inspiring us to join them!

As pioneers in the development of an indigenous wildlife reintroduction and sanctuary project, their reserve is one of the most extraordinary and accomplished conservation projects in South Africa. Most of the species that you will be viewing on their safaris were close to extinction due to farming in the region. It took 20 years to assemble the lands and re-establish the natural vitality. The first elephant herd and lion pride were introduced in 2004 and are thriving. Both black and white rhinos have been introduced and in partnership with Helping Rhinos, substantial funds are invested in education and protection programs.

"The purpose of the Kariega Foundation is to enhance the well-being of local communities through enterprise development, education and youth development; and to be united in our efforts to protect and conserve the natural heritage of the Eastern Cape, particularly the Kariega wilderness."  There are numerous ways that as responsible travellers we can assist. Naturally, we like that as safari quests, or as volunteers, we become not only supporters but partners in these efforts.

As proud members of Pack for a Purpose, an international initiative that allows travellers to make a lasting impact in their destination community, Kariega has introduced us to a wonderful way to make small but much-appreciated contributions to better the lives of the local people and enhance their environment.
